Hawaii Beach Safety Tips

1. Swim in life guarded areas, & check with them
daily regarding ocean conditions.

2. Never swim, snorkel or surf alone.
Use the buddy system & swim fins when possible.

3. Watch the ocean for at least 20 minutes before entering.
Waves & surges come in sets with calm periods in between.
Never turn your back to the ocean.

4. Do not rely on flotation devices such as surfboards, boogie boards & rafts. If you can't swim, stay on the shoreline.
Look for warning signs & flags, and take their
message seriously.

5. No alcoholic beverages are allowed on most beaches, and no matter which beach you choose, lock your car and never, ever leave your valuables unattended.

6. Supervise children closely, even when a lifeguard is present.

7. Never dive head-first into the water.

8. If caught in a rip current: Don't panic; don't fight it;
swim parallel to the shore, then in.

9. Slip, Slap, Slop! Slip into a shirt, slap on a hat, slop on the sunscreen. Protect yourself from the sun.
